The History of Surfing in Ixtapa

In order to find the right surfing destination, one has to consider a lot of different factors. After all, it's not just about how big the waves are, though that's certainly a big part of it. Historically, Ixtapa has been a gold-mine for surfers looking for the perfect spot, and year after year, more gems in Ixtapa were uncovered. The first surfing spot was discovered at Playas Las Gatas in Zihuatanejo Bay back in the 1960s. Also around this time, another amazing surfing spot was found at Petacalco, which offers a powerful beach break that created massive waves and tubes. Unfortunately, due to the construction of the José María Morelos dam, the waves aren't what they used to be. As time went on, more surf spots were discovered by visiting foreigners who came to the region in search of the ultimate waves. Those became places known today as La Saladita, Manzanillo Bay, Troncones and Oyster Bay.

Where to Surf in Ixtapa

Ixtapa will always have her legacy surfing spots, but if you travel there today, there are a few key places you'll want to visit. Check out Plaza Madero inside of Zihuatanejo Bay, Playa Escolleras, which is at the eastern side of Playa el Palmar and Playa Linda, which is just slightly up the coast from Ixtapa.

Where to surf in Troncones

Troncones is blessed with year round surf, but the waves get bigger in summer. And Troncones surf spots abound, from local Troncones beach and point breaks to more famous nearby breaks like La Saladita and the Ranch. Offering many more comforts — like empty beaches, in-house internet, stores, restaurants, yoga, massage, etc — than other local surf spots, Troncones is the perfect base for a surfing safari. Troncones’ big surf season shines from April to the beginning of November. Beginning towards the end of the dry season, and moving through the first rains (usually at night), through the spectacular greening (where everything explodes into lush foliage, seemingly overnight), and into the vibrant, gorgeous rainy season—Troncones surf is up and Nature is at its most lavish.
