Independence Day in Mexico is celebrated on September 16. It commemorates the "Grito de Dolores" of 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo cried out against Spanish oppression and in favor of the independence of Mexico in the small Mexican town called Dolores.

September is a special month for Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico. During this time, the area joins the nation to celebrate its Independence. Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is also the center point in the state of Guerrero for the International Day of Peace celebration on September 21.
