Prominent Mexican Architects

Luis Barragan is regarded as the most prominent architect of the 20th century. “My house is my refuge, an emotional piece of architecture, not a cold piece of convenience.” – The  Legacy of Luis Barragan: Architecture of Color

His works are great and many. Casa Franco, in 1929, has Arabic influence, especially present in the front door. Casa Estudio was built by Luis Barragan in 1948, and was included by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage project in 2004,  but his most well known work is the entrance to Satellite City, just north of Mexico City. The 5 triangular Concrete Towers that stand guard from different heights are one of the most important icons of Mexico City.

Ricardo Legorreta, who was awarded the prestigious UIA Gold Medal in 1999, the AIA Gold Medal in 2000, and the Premium Imperiale in 2011, was a designer of both private houses and public buildings.

Some of his works include The San Antonio Public Library, Texas A&M University in Qatar, Santa Fe University of Art and Design, among others. And in Mexico,  the Papalote Museo del Nino, Contemporary Museum in Monterrey, and most of the Camino Real Hotels, just to mention a few.

Pedro Ramirez Vazquez, is without a doubt, mostly  recognized for his masterpiece: The Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, and of course, The Aztec Stadium (Estadio Azteca), among others, but what many people do not know, is that he developed a system to build schools in rural areas. Hence, constructing thousands of schools in Mexico, as well as schools abroad. UNICEF has used these same systems.

Tatiana Bilbao has focused on sustainable design, and social housing. Her works often merge geometry with nature. Her works include: The Observatory House I La Blanca Mexico, and The Ordos House in Mongolia, China.

Alberto Kalach, whose most notable work is the Jose Vasconcelos Library, and The Reforma Tower.

Architecture magnificency should be extended to residential developments as well. Architects such as Enrique Zozaya, who studied architecture at La Salle University and worked for Ricardo Legorreta and Ramirez Vazquez as a Project developer, This influenced him greatly and he has created magnificent developments in coastal areas. His legacy extends to his son Daniel Zozaya who infuses new blood and a “Must” for sustainable and organic. And this is why their Projects should be included on this list.
